* Istanbul May 2007
Posted on June 1st, 2007 by lane. Filed under Travel.
I have been sitting on this entry for a few days.
Having taken in so much in Istanbul and trying to pen it down is so diff because it was truly a wonderous, strange, beautiful and even sad place.
Rome and Paris landmarks left me awestruck but Istanbul left me breathless at times as i was engulfed with the sight, smell and sounds of the people. These are a people who rarely show a smile. Its a place where the people and culture take centre stage and i think back on it fondly ever so often.
One thing is for sure, visiting Istanbul has left me wanting to return to Asia even more.
I love Asia’s diversity. Europe is nothing but castles and churches and beer and beer..
Asia has grit, asia has personality, asia has food and drinks that taste so good.
Oh and one thing… A European fren went to Singapore and said that its so nice blah blah blah… and said that its just as how his frens said it was- Singapore is not like Asia at all. Its diff from Asia….( they jus cant believe we have more stuff than them- jus look at our shopping)
I take that as finally realising that Asia has too much to offer and shld never be looked down on… man i am sounding so patriotic!
Moving on
Istanbul in a nutshell is a city of sounds and smells. The sites are not that breathtaking if you compare it to the Roman works of arts but this city captures your heart with its rawness and simplicity.
Even as we lay in our hotel rooms, there would be turkish music coming from the restaurants till 3 or 4 in the morning…I just lay awake on our last night, taking in the sounds of people, the prayer calls, the music…
The day reverberated with the sound of prayer calls that seemed to dull away the heat of the day and drowned other sounds.
The streets were packed and as i people watched i couldnt quite grasp this unusual clash btw east and west. They have hair and mannerisms similar to the Indians and Malays but their faces look Europeanish. Most of the men have sunkissed burnt skin and look pretty gruffy. There were much fewer women on the streets in comparison. The women most certainly look better groomed.
I admit maybe i looked too hard at them but they looked at me and Mas like we were aliens too. Seeing Asians using their tram and walking their streets as we did must have been a bit of a weird sight for them too. The only other Asians we bumped into seemed to be the Japanese tour groups gathered around tourist hot spots (who love to travel with a tour bus, a guide and and in big big group)
SATURDAY
We are at the port of the Bhosphorous Boat Cruise. I wanted to take it but i dont want to stink of the sea and be sea sick after that! moreover it takes hours. We had only 2 days. The second pic is of the Imperial Mosque ( i think )

Not quite sure why its new. Its quite old but maybe in relative comparisons to the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia…

Spice and Grand Bazaar
If u cant say no to pirated bags, carpets, jewellery or tea cup sets or cute souvenir shops than this place is a nightmare for you.
The business men here are well… like CON artists. They kissed my hand, served me tea… the works. All in the name of selling something! Not all the shop owners are cut throat or conmen but be prepared to spot one and run far far away. These conmen have a knack of making crap sound like gold. I have never been so cheated in my life as i have been burnt too many times and swore never again to be dupped! ARGHHH… Also, we didnt tour the entire place b4 buying our stuff and i think thats what happens when u are overwhelmed by 4000 shops!!! Hallo… we came back from Istanbul so poorr….
There happens to be this one stall behind that has an entourage of gigolo looking men who sell bags. Mas Got one from them and right after we left the shop, we were like ” DAMN GOOD LOOKING AH”… Shit i was looking all sweaty and disgusting…. but the head gigolo was trying to use his charms on me to get me to get Mas to cave in for a higher price. He brushed his hand gently on my arm and asked me to persuade my hubby. DUDE, i live in the street of GOOD LOOKING MEN, i am imune, you got the Wrong lady to pull ur charms off. hahaha… I didnt mind at all really…I wanted to take a photo of these muscular casanovaish guys but Mas lowered the price to the point where the head gigolo just wanting to kick us out.
Its easy to spot these eyecandies neveretheless as that they have a knack of calling out to WOMEN only!

Underground Cistern- My Favourite
Used to be a reservoir and now they covered it but it still leaks water from the top ! It was slippery but still a very interesting underground place!

See the medusa head below, Apparently its still a mystery as to why the heads lie in 2 funny angle- upside down and tilted to one side…My hypothesis is that when the workers had to move the rock, they got tired and just left it as it is. Makes sense cause if i had to move such a heavy slab of rock, lazy me would have done the same. Come on, its not for warding off bad luck as rumoured!
Okay,Historians frown now.

Archaeological Museum- Absolute Favourite
This is a little gem tucked right in a corner outside Topaki Palace. Its underated. Its a little Haven.
There are people who reviewed this idealic museum as the best stop for them and even their kids loved it.
If kids love it i would too…
Initally we couldnt find the entrance and there was like NO ONE…
Than i decided that if some European Council awarded the Museum of the Year award, it must be good. Dont be deceived by all the silly tourist heading for that boring Palace only….
Mummies, hieroglyphics, decryption, beautiful tombs, Statues of ancient gods
Simply amazing

I couldnt quite grasp at how Islam and Christainity could live so closely side by side. Its almost as if both religions naturally exsited side by side for this capital. Hagia Sophia Embodies Islamic symbols and Christain mosiac tiled walls. I felt confused initially but it quickly sinks in and seems ” normal” in a peaceful sort of way.
Many Shops sold Christain and Islamic souvenoirs. Same design and gift but diff religious symbols painted on it…

Obviously, there are many many mosques in Istanbul and there’s where this most favourite shot of mine was taken at. Both mas and i spotted this little boy trying to copy his dad actions and he was so excited every time he managed to get a step right.
The smile on his face was priceless and beautiful. After his dad finished taking his ablution, he had no one to copy and he quickly moved himself next to another person to be his learning subject… haha… His dad soon came along and seeing how his son was being such a cute copy cat finally assisted him. His dad had the sweetest and most tender smile on his face.
The people take their ablution right outside the mosque with tons of ppl strolling by. They have nothing to hide and cleansing oneself is an open yet private affair. I never saw this in Singapore b4 so this was indeed an eye opener.
Travelling is no longer about just catching the sights and having had the best holiday ever. Its all about the country and the people. The people were all out in full force on Sundays (although the number of men strongly outnumbered the women) and they did not shop at the grand bazaar or spice market but in the more deserted alleyways surrounding it. It seemed to me that a country living on tourism did not necessarily profit the masses. It was sad for me to see young children who worked in shops, cleaning and scrubbing away or would make some money with a spontaneous stand selling scarfs in the night. The children are the future of a country and seeing how life can be hard even for young ones, it broke my heart.
I am not trying to make it seem like Istanbul is not a developing city or prosperous. What i am trying to say is more like it seems to me that living in this city is tough and tiring. Life struggles borne beautiful precious moments such as these …
I think it will be hard for me to forget this place because its just so unforgettable.

* Rome in 2.5 days
Posted on May 20th, 2007 by lane. Filed under Travel.
What Happened
The plane took off without us.. due to this dickhead who was screaming in german for missing passengers. ASSHOLE! Its not that we dont get it but he was an italian man sounding like an absolute lunatic. I could not decipher what the heck he was saying. And to top it off, when we complained abt our flight going off, he jus said that he was yelling so loudly we should have heard it… TO me all these ppl are damn lazy. They closed the gate half an hour b4 taking off. ASSESSS
So, we were offererd business class seats to ROME! Freaking hell. Expecting the whole ” i am your slave” from the stewardess, we got the opposite instead. These air stewardess looked like they emerged from Bed and got readywithout a mirror. The service was abyssmal and at times like this, i applaud Singapore airlines in every way. Our fellow biz class frens had black berries in their hands and were acting all biz and impt with their laptops while i was fidgeting non stop and feeling appalled that the only thing distingusing this biz class was a CURTAIN! Also we were made to fly 3 hours more!!!
We stayed in 3 diff hotels cause our booking was IN JUNE and we didnt check.. Lodging was one big fat drama. We stayed in 3 diff B&B… ALL LOVELY and CLEAN unlike Paris!

5 Gelatos and 3 pizzas in 2.5 days. LOVED IT. DIVINE ….. i want to go back just to eat the ice cream… Italians really have good food, no wonder the men are quite burly… but quite handsome…
The Vatican was BREATHTAKING. I shall not elaborate. Its too stunning and full of grandur. Only an SLR camera would do it any justice… I personally tot the lourve was good… The Vatican is a million times more stunning..

We took a group tour of 55 ppl and getting in was almost an hour plus wait.. but it was worth the time and money because i got to jump the long queue outside and see michelangelo’s brillance in paintings, scupltors and history in the flesh. He painted the domes for 6 years in such an awkward position. He’s the old man in the montage above*i hope i’m right*.

THE VATICAN is a must see before you die…. By the time i had hit the vatican and st peters basilica* equally breathtaking*, i was in awe of how works of art like that could be created. Its so incredible…. I love love loved it…

The Colosseum is another must see. Fights took place btw gladiator and gladiator, gladiator and animals and animals and animals.
For such a gruesome past, this attraction is steeped in history and is such a magnificant beauty. Its been plundered and just standing on the 2nd floor looking down into the soily maze is amazing.. Then we wondered off into ancient rome where the roman forum was and i was dissapointed because the movies seem to have depicted it wrongly!!! Artifects and ruins are still being carefully exumed and it was all a little too overwhelming at times. The remains of history has never left me this awestruck b4!

The exciting part of it all was that incidentally we managed to save abit on entrance fees because we arrived on a special week- free musuem entrance!! That was nice. pplus we took a hop on hop off bus to see Rome, to avoid breaking our backs and feet.
On the last day, we didnt have much time as we had to catch a 3 pm flight. But after straining my brain with a CHINESE MAP* bloody tourist official gave me one despite me speaking English, the only language i can!!!!* i managed to get us to a PASAR MALAM MADE IN ROME!!! I WAS SO HAPPY>>>> over here in Munich everything is so square. not a pirated anything in sight K!
OKay there are 2 types of pirated bag man. one is the Indian guy along the streets of the pantheon and the trevi fountain and the another are the blacks at the real pasar malam… THE pasar malam types are much better but u have to bargain hard..they really know how to rip ppl of their $$.

Italians love to kiss and kiss and kiss. Everywhere i turn i saw couples kissing and its not normal kissing. Its very frenchy.
Below is one photo of this couple that was tonguing so intensively, i jus had to laugh!!! You could see their tongue and all. My, it was very passionate and GROSS….
huk huk huk

If ever anyone asks me where to go, i would just say Rome for the Vatican and Basilica and Ice cream and culture. Europe is boring but Rome oh Rome is in a world of its own. Its not just about churches and castles. They have fountains and food and people and amazing artifects. Rome was truly not built in a day and i guarantee it wont BORE a soul.
I HEART ROME!

random pics-

I barely have time to recover and i will be off to Istanbul this friday… till monday again than… CIAO

I am beat.
Salzburg is beautifully boring…oxymoron but thats how it is…
To sum it up, churches, a famous fotress that has amazing view of the alps and the entire Salzburg region, a pathetic shopping street with Mozart’s place of Birth (yellow shophouse) and lush greenery….The colors are amazing and the place is very touristy..

Note:The last two photos were at the base of the fotress after taking the cable car down. The whirly thingy is an example of the canals that were used in the past to supply water to the different parts of salzburg.. Brillant if you ask me. Then the photo with rows of Balls( sounds so gross) is actually a representation of what was used to fight on ships and on land in the past.
Fotress is a must see in Salzburg.. everything else pales in comparison to the awesome view at the top.
Ok. Watching The Dance Floor really disgusted and cracked me up all at once.. I couldnt understand why they picked such spastic judges and i can only say that the Malays will win all the singapore idol, dance idol, whatever idol to with the arts… Damn gross siah the show.. I cringe at how i used to like to dance stupid dances too… puke puke…Glenn Ong looks and hosts like shit. For a dance show, why couldnt they have picked younger hipper hosts? MY God.. OLD FOLKS to host a dance show… tsk tsk tsk.. Looks like Channel 5 is still channel 5 after all… And Jade to part host it?? Her accent and english is not desirable.. At least the chinese channles put on more interesting variety shows.. I miss Singapore TV#&^$ It makes me cringe and laugh alot!!!
Ahead lies Rome on the 16th of May.. cant wait for that.. cause Rome is so historical and i need to see a change of sight please.. no more churches and castles.. it drives me nuttsss…
Hopefully,G W, we get to go to NYC!!!!! That will be sometime in June..
I need to get out of this European world and into something more modern to spice up my life..BRING IT ON!
ciao
* Trips and Anniversary
Posted on April 28th, 2007 by lane. Filed under Daily Life, Travel.
Tomorrow i head off to Salzburg, better known for where Sound Of Music was produced. I think there wont be anything very exciting.. maybe more scenic stuff… yawns… I was thinking to see the salt or ice mines in Salzburg but that is damn troublesome…
We have a few trips ahead that needs to be planned soon.. maybe to vienna, rome, italy??? We cant decide where to just yet so we are taking short trips for the time being.
In around 2 months, it would our 1st year Wedding Anniversary!
From 2 singles,

To this…

I really loved how everything fell into place at the last minute, all at the right time. Everything was fab.
My aunty who owns Irene Creations sponsered the beautiful gown in the first wedding pic.. The frills on it was simply stunning… ..
I was a nervous wreck that day and i was so happy that my side of the family was rather composed and nothing went wrong!
Thank God.
In the second pic i think he was laughing cause i was saying that i wanted to shut the photographers mouth up.
He repeatedly insisted on ” FUNKY” shots!@#^$… I mean in Public area and in front of our family k.. I was like… OMG HELP ME…I am conservative like that!! Did he want some tongue action??? Yea, so we had to do some DECENT PDA but at least there were onlookers rooting for us…. People even took photos of and with us… so it felt good… hahaha.. My Uncle acted as the second camera man and was literally in the photographer’s way most of the time….. I have so many memories of that day and i think it was a surreal, weird, yet perfect wedding for me…
* Paris 4th-8th April 2007

Paris in a nutshell is musky, smelly and simply fascinating.
There is a plethora of materialism in this city.
Too much has been written about the sights but i choose to write still about the feelings they evoke.
People….
Weird, colorful, vibrant.
Weird cause, i saw a young pleasant looking man BRUSH his TEETH in the TRAIN!OMG.
There are alot of colored people which left me people watching most of the time. Its sad to see that colored people seem to be type casted still: Blacks work as secruity guards and seem to hold menial jobs, while asians mend the CD,LV counters and the whites…. i dun know…The country is definitely more diverse than munich but in terms of being a fashion hub, it loses hands down to the people in Munich.
The pace of life is slighty faster than in singapore and overall the people look rushed, rugged even tired.
Attractions…..
The first night was spent in the airport. I know it sounds crazy but we didnt want to take the risk of taking a train to the centre only to find no spare rooms. Moreover, we needed to have 16 euros in COINS because the machines didnt accept any of our credit cards. We called the airport metro chairs our refuge for the night and it was horrible. Dont try it. The place was freezing and some other overnighters inluding both of us were grouped together. Safety in numbers right…. Oh, then along came this phillipino mother and daughter pair who had lost their luggage taking British Airways and they chatted us up. Man they were so damn talkative. They left after 2 hours of wasting my listening time…apparently the loss of luggage happens alot to ppl taking this airline…

We stayed till 6 am and took the second train out to our hotel in the centre of Paris. What a big fat relieve.
The next day, we walked around Champs Elysees and naturally i pulled him into Sephora with me. Its overhyped man. Alot of boring brands can be found and common ones too. I think they dont carry alot of brands that the American Sephora stores carry such as Dr Murad,Peter Thomas Roth. No ANNA SUI in the store as well. PUkes. Shu Uemura was overpriced and even with a 15 % deduction in VAT, the price is still not competitive.
There was this asian promoter as the store and when she spoke french i almost burst out laughing. Heres what she said….
French asian lady: “This givenchy perfume is made of grass…. It is irresistible….you can put it in your toilet because the box is like a diamond.Open and close like dis… Only in sephora…. you can just turn around and i am here…okay bye. ” (all in the typical french speaking english accent) LEMAS eyes were popping out of his socket and i was bitting my tongue to prevent from laughing.
I like to complain but theres obviously some perks to Sephora. They are generous with their samples and i helped myself to shiesedo future eye cream, elizabeth arden ceramide cream spf 15, sisley sunblock, Dr brandt line cream. Huk huk huk.. Their house brand is affordable and they have a large range of cosmetics.

We saw Dior, Hermes, blah blah blah and frankly, it was a bit boring.
Friday we visited The Lourve. It is said that if a person were to take a minute each and look at each and every artifect in that building, they would need months to look through everything in there. Personally i think that the Lourve is a must see Museum. I am not cultured but the paintings and scultptures were beautiful. Hmm..i remember alot of naked male sculptures but it was not that “impressive”…. huk huk… The Asian section was incredibly boring. While the Greek side was more interesting.

The best was Mona lisa’s section. Why? Cause we spent our time trying to get a picture of her and trying our very best to avoid being smacked off by the securtity guards.

He nudged me twice to keep my camera therefore i only managed to take 2 shots of her. They’re very blur because of all the morons scrambling to the front and blocking my view.
Whatever it is, sneaking photographs was pretty fun.
We reached the Eiffel tower at night and it was stunning. Looking up from the base of it, through the hole in the middle made me queasy! But it was beautiful from afair and up close with the white lights on. People who have the guts to go up are truly gutsy and are crazy casuse the queue is a bitch..

See the shot below? It was so funny. Mas asked me to stand on the bench so i could get this shot. All the tourist started copying. I took photos for evidence. This one shows them sitting down but there were other copy cats standing at the same bench as us!

The River Seine was georgeous. Loved walking along the sides to admire the side painting shops and stare at all the crazy people absorbing UVA and UVB rays.

Look the crazy police dont walk along the seine river, they rollar blade.MY gosh, totally old school.
There was this beautiful stretch of park along the Notre dame with such beautiful flowering trees and a cosily tucked away park .People just lazed around and slept on the benches.

Ah… LeMas was great at manuvering the metro and we got around without a glitch. Its way cheaper and easier to get around. But be warned. Its SMELLY. ITs STINKY. ITS MUSKY. ITS FUNKY.
Ah, we visited the Moulin Rouge just to get a glimpse of Paris own Red light district. Wow. Its full of sex shops. A whole stretch of shops to watch XXX, shops with large assortments of you know what, peep shows and all..

Last but not least, i needed some form of memorabilia from this place..
And so… the lure of Louis Vuitton seemed like a pretty good take away.It was full of nothing but ASIANS! you know black colored hair people like myself ? The LV booth was mended by ASIANS staff and customers. It was like a wet market and i was part of it.. shame on me.. hahahaha… I walked in and out the first day of the Galaries Lafayette LV store empty handed and totally undecided only to return the second day.
Voila

You get the picture.
Random Shots of us and Paris

* PARIS
Posted on April 3rd, 2007 by lane. Filed under Travel.
I am shallow.
I am leaving for Paris tom and all i can do is search for places to shop and read reviews on beauty products.
My god. I have been sitting at this desk and searching through the entire Makeupalley.com reviews and memorising the Skin Type book.
My god. I have not been researching on how to get around Paris. Choke. I seem to believe that the scents of eyeshadows and face creams will get me to sephora, along the famous Champs Elysees. Who wants to see all the boring famous sights? Thats what discovery channel is for!
Okay, since i am leaving tom at 10pm and have not booked a hotel room for tom night cause we cant get anyone in that particular hotel who doesnt only say , pardon and bonjour, we cant communicate our wish to extend our stay. Shit. So we sleep in the airport tom night… anything for sephora, anything for sephora….
I have been doing a crazy search for safe effective products based on research and ingredients.
For skin types: Sensitive, normal to dry skin type, prone to clogging, cant use alot of sunblocks.
Dr Murad Day Reform Treatment- apparently, it has retinol inside and some collagen inducing ingredients. I have never tried their acne range but i also havent heard a lot of good reviews on it. I think their Vit C range * murad essential C night moisture
* would benefit those with drier skin and pigmentation problems though.
Cetaphil products- if you use a ton of products and always get clogged pores no matter what, i suggest their sensitive skin moisturiser. Beautiful. I cannot rave enough about this gentle product.
Elizabeth Arden- They have good and bad products like anyother brand but i have never experienced much irritation with this brand. If i can take it i am sure alot of ppl can. Their moisturisers are good and i like their vit c capsule. I used it long ago and it pumps moisture into the skin.
Weleda- only sunblock i can say doesnt clog pores at all. This line is organic, suitable for vegans and doesnt test on animals. They do not jam pack their products with a thousand ingredients and this helps to minimise breakouts. Great for very sensitive skin types.
Dr Hauschka- cleanser is excellent for people with normal to oily skins. Their rose cream is great for very very dry skin.
OLay- I would only recommend the more expensive anti aging creams and serums from this range. The cheap products from this range give me bumps. I know many ppl who love olay 7 signs anti aging serums. Their masks are great.
La roche posay- Active C for lines
Biotherm- good only in singapore or in humid climates. Not good in colder countries with harsh waters.
Makeup
shu Uemura cleansing oil. the best.
Shu Uemura foundations
YSl foundations* too frequent usage or long usage can result in bumps
Maybelline mousse
Every powder i have tried leads to clogged pores. So i dont use any now
Facial washes or moisturisers that do a good job in breaking me out.
neutrogena
Eucerin
loreal
tons of drugstore brands
tons of japanese products that are too oily
Vichy facial washes
In Summary, a hell lot of things break me out.Yea, i have to live with my fussy skin and i dont like that its super high maintenance but what other choice do i have. Spring is approaching and it looks like sunblock is going to be my best guard against more freckles! If i were back in Singapore, i would love to go to the derm cause they are the best. I havent been to one yet but i bet they are way better than the derms here. I want to get my ear lobe infection taken care of and see what i can do about very old scars when i go home. 5 more months… !!
Moving along, i was watching American Idol and i cant say that i like any of the ladies. I am not bias. I am bored of women winning american idol and doing a hell lot better than the men. Its crap. Look at the guy with white hair that won and Ruben… blah… Anyhow i love this song i put up. Sang by Blake in American idol… Hmm i am not so sure that he is that original at all. He just copied 311.. what a good strategy to sing a remake by a rather unknown band.
This is the best version.
Salut and see you guys on Monday.Wish my pockets luck!
